    Going on This Journey Together!

For his first campaign appearance, President Obama traveled home to Chicago yesterday. Addressing a packed room of supporters at Navy Pier, the President talked about how far we've come together and the journey ahead.

    o2012_Chicago_Genn44_Kickoff_041411_0063
{One of the things that I've seen again and again over the last couple of years is the conversation in Washington is very different from the conversation around kitchen tables and office coolers. And I wanted to make sure that our campaign was rooted in your hopes and rooted in your dreams. I want to make sure we're putting the campaign in your hands—in the same hands, the same organizers, the same volunteers who proved the last time that together ordinary folks can do extraordinary things. That's what this campaign is about.
    o2012_Chicago_Genn44_Kickoff_041411_0568_1
If you hadn't knocked on all those doors, if you hadn't called up all your friends back in 2008, I wouldn't be here. But you know what, we didn't come here tonight just to go down Memory Lane. We didn't come here tonight just to pat ourselves on the back. We came here tonight because we know that for all the progress we've made we've still got business to do. We are not finished. And the only way we're going to finish is the same way we began this journey, and that is together.
    o2012_Chicago_Genn44_Kickoff_041411_0998-1
We've got a big vision for America, of a compassionate America and a caring America and an ambitious America, not a small America. It's a vision where we're living within our means but we're still investing in our future. Where everyone makes sacrifices; no one bears all the burden. Where we live up to the idea that no matter who we are or what we look like, no matter whether our ancestors landed on Ellis Island or came here on slave ships or across the Rio Grande, we are connected to one another. That I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper. In this country, we rise and fall together.
    o2012_Chicago_Genn44_Kickoff_041411_1257-1
This is not my campaign. This is your campaign. And I've got to tell you, there's going to come a time when I'll fully engage in this race. When the time comes, I will be campaigning. I'll be ready to go. But I've got to tell you, right now, I still have this day job—and that's why I'm going to need your help now more than ever. This campaign is still in its early stages, but now is the time when you can help shape it to make sure it gets out of the gate strong.
    Gen44 Rally Chicago, April 2011

    So whenever you hear people say our problems are too big to solve or we can't bring about the changes we seek, I want you to think about all the progress we've already made. I think—I want you to think about all the unfinished business that lies ahead. I want you to be excited about the future that lies before us. And I want to remind you, and I want you to remind everybody else, of those simple words that summed up what we believe as a people: Yes, we can. }

    Obama arrives Chicago

President Barack Obama greets supporters after he arrives at O'Hare International Airport on Thursday. (William DeShazer, Tribune / April 14, 2011)

Air Force One has landed at O'Hare International Airport, bringing President Barack Obama to his hometown to raise funds for his 2012 re-election campaign. The president, accompanied by his chief of staff, Chicagoan William Daley, arrived shortly after 5 p.m. He is scheduled to attend two private fundraisers--at the N9NE and MK Chicago restaurants--before heading to the main event at Navy Pier. Tickets range from $100 to the legal maximum of $35,800. Part of the money will go to the president's 2012 re-election campaign and part to the Democratic National Committee. The Navy Pier event is hosted by Gen44, a group of young Obama supporters. About 2,000 are expected to attend. Notable attendees will include Bulls star Derrick Rose, Pittsburgh Steeler and former University of Illinois player Rashard Mendenhall and Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks. Grammy Award-winner Colbie Caillat will perform. Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel also is scheduled to be there. The restaurant fundraisers will each be attended by about 225 people. Obama's return to Chicago comes as his campaign staff is setting up his national campaign headquarters here on an entire 50,000-square-foot floor of One Prudential Plaza. He will spend the night in Chicago and return to D.C. on Friday. And he and first lady Michelle Obama will return in two weeks to tape one of the final episodes of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on April 27. That show is set to air May 2. Winfrey is ending her show later in May after 25 years.

    --------------------------------------

    -------

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION

On April 12, 1861, artillery guns boomed across Charleston Harbor in an attack on Fort Sumter. These were the first shots of a civil war that would stretch across 4 years of tremendous sacrifice, with over 3 million Americans serving in battles whose names reach across our history. The meaning of freedom and the very soul of our Nation were contested in the hills of Gettysburg and the roads of Antietam, the fields of Manassas and the woods of the Wilderness. When the terrible and costly struggle was over, a new meaning was conferred on our country's name -- the United States of America. We might be tested, but whatever our fate might be, it would be as one Nation.

The Civil War was a conflict characterized by legendary acts of bravery in the face of unprecedented carnage. Those who lived in these times -- from the resolute African American soldier volunteering his life for the liberation of his fellow man to the determined President secure in the rightness of his cause -- brought a new birth of freedom to a country still mending its divisions.

On this milestone in American history, we remember the great cost of the unity and liberty we now enjoy, causes for which so many have laid down their lives. Though America would struggle to extend equal rights to all our citizens and carry out the letter of our laws after the war, the sacrifices of soldiers, sailors, Marines, abolitionists, and countless other Americans would bring a renewed significance to the liberties established by our Founders. When the guns fell silent and the fate of our Nation was secured, blue and gray would unite under one flag and the institution of slavery would be forever abolished from our land.

As a result of the sacrifice of millions, we would extend the promise and freedom enshrined in our Constitution to all Americans. Through the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, we would prohibit slavery and indentured servitude, establish equal protection under the law, and extend the right to vote to former slaves. We would reach for a more perfect Union together as Americans, bound by the collective threads of history and our common hopes for the future.

We are the United States of America -- we have been tested, we have repaired our Union, and we have emerged stronger. As we respond to the critical challenges of our time, let us do so as adherents to the enduring values of our founding and stakeholders in the promise of a shared tomorrow.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 12, 2011, as the first day of the Civil War Sesquicentennial. I call upon all Americans to observe this Sesquicentennial with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that honor the legacy of freedom and unity that the Civil War bestowed upon our Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twelfth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fifth.
